Sun-kissed DIGHA

Hello fellow traveller,

Digha, the second home of the Bengalese, is an absolute delight for weekend tours, sudden plans and short trips. Located along the shores of Bay of Bengal in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, Digha is also popular as mini GOA. Hence on the eve of Bengali Nababarsha (New Year) we planned a sudden 3 days trip to Digha.

Destination Digha, Day 1

Being a resident of Durgapur, we have multiple communication options to reach Digha & we chose the Howrah-Digha Super-Fast AC Express and reached Digha on 14th April 2019 at 2:15 pm, just a day before Bengali New Year. The train journey was awesome but the FOOD served in the train was AWFUL. I will suggest to opt for “NO MEAL” in this particular train. Anyway we immediately start surfing hotels near the sea beach for spot booking as we had no advance bookings. Now, I must mention that there are two main places to live in Digha, Old Digha and New Digha. If you want to surf hotels in Old Digha you may hire a TOTO or AUTO from outside the Digha Station. But New Digha is just beside the Railway Station, so you can just walk and surf the hotels unless you have a huge baggage or you are too reluctant to walk. So finally we selected a hotel near the New Digha sea beach named HOTEL NEW SAGARPRIYA. Though the hotel is in a PRIME LOCATION, it seemed to me a bit OVERPRICED. We freshened up fast and landed in the beach. And the splashing waves, the roaring sound, the colorful ambiance refreshed each and every tired neurons of us. In the evening we visited Old Digha and enjoyed a splendid time in the Biswa-Bangla arena along with some delicious dishes from WOW-MOMO and the hawkers as well. Also the creative handicrafts with cockles are highly attractive and alluring. P.S.- You can hire a TOTO or AUTO anywhere and anytime to visit any place in Digha. (Minimum fare Rs.50). You will find the shells & handicrafts made of cockles a bit cheaper in OLD DIGHA than NEW DIGHA.

Destination Digha, Day 2

For Day 2 we had planned to visit UDAYPUR SEA BEACH which is 2.5 kms from the New Digha Sea beach. Well you can easily reach there by hiring a TOTO, but we had a different plan. We started at 9:30 am, walked along the seashore, clicked photographs, played with the waves & reached Udaypur Sea beach after 1:30 hrs. In Udaypur Sea beach we had a super delicious CRAB DISH made right in front of us. There are other entertainment options also like fish fries, beer, hookah, body message that you will get on Udaypur Sea beach. Returned to New Digha, bathed in the sea for nearly 2 hrs and get back to hotel. In the evening we visited the Biswa-Bangla arena once again and spent some serene time sitting in one of the concrete benches just in front of the crashing waves in Old Digha.

P.S.- For food and drinks(soft & hard) there are innumerable options in both Old & New Digha. So just land on any one of them and you will have your desired cuisine. Rates are reasonable. CRAB DISHES’ rates start from Rs.80 and onward according to size and number of CRABS.

Destination Digha, Day 3

MOHONA is another place to visit in Digha and we visited on our 3rd or last day of our trip. Since it is off season now so we can’t experience the auction of fishes but still we enjoyed the place, observed the little crabs busy in digging sands, had some photo shoots etc.. For the auction you have to visit Mohona during the rainy season which starts from June.

P.S- To visit Mohona, you have to hire a TOTO or AUTO for a fixed fare of Rs.200 and an additional Rs.10 is required as an entry fee to Mohona. Also wherever you stay you have to pay Rs.10 per head to the Digha Development Authority.
